When searching for a home, wouldn’t it be great if you could make some up-front decisions that would lead to ongoing savings once you move in?

Here is a list of features that will help do exactly that – save on your household bills while being kind to the environment in the process.

Double glazing

Insulation is an extremely useful factor. It keeps temperatures regulated, and is implemented throughout apartments in many ways – one of which can be double glazed windows. These have two panes of glass with an insulated gap of air sandwiched between them, minimising the transference of heat or cold.

Look for apartments that feature this and it will significantly reduce your reliance on energy for cooling in summer and heating in winter. Bonus – also helps block out noise from outside.

Window shades

While window shades are widely used to create a unique visual appearance for low-rise projects, they also serve a highly functional purpose of blocking out direct sunlight to keep your apartment cooler in summer.

Rainwater harvesting systems

Apartments with rainwater harvesting and reuse systems collect rainwater to be used throughout the development. Some uses include landscaping and toilets - so you're not flushing perfectly good drinking water down the drain. Not only is this more eco-conscious, but it also reduces your water bill.

Cross-ventilation

Where possible, architects can design apartments with multiple windows that create cross-ventilation through the living spaces, meaning they can be cooled naturally during summer without costing you a cent.

Green Star-rated construction

Above all else, check the proposed Green Star rating for the project. Any developer keen to create an energy-efficient project will mention their Green Star rating it in their marketing material.

There are construction methods that help apartment buildings operate with a minimum amount of energy usage, and help residents reduce their energy bills. A rating of 4 Stars or above is a must.
